4 steps to save at British Airways

1. Sign up to the Executive Club

From yearly holiday goers to frequent flyers, it just makes sense to sign up to the Executive Club. You will immediately begin collecting points when you fly, book a hotel stay or car rental via British Airways or their partners.

In return, these points can be spent on flights, hotels, car hire or even in-flight for drinks or WiFi. You will begin tn the Blue tier and as you travel more, you can upgrade to new tiers with more benefits.

Bronze

Attained after at least 300 tier points on two or more flights a year. Here are your extra benefits: 

• Priority check in and boarding
• Free seat selection 7 days before departure

Silver

Must have 600 tier points from at least four flights in a year. Additional perks include:

• Free seat selection at booking
• Access to business lounges
• Extra baggage allowance

Gold

Available after 1,500 tier points from at least four flights in a year. On top of all the other perks, these members receive:

• First class check in and boarding
• Additional reward flight availability

2. Book in advance and out of season

Prices always get more expensive the closer you get to your desired departure. We recommend booking at least three months in advance with six months being the ideal time period. Likewise, peak periods, such as summer months, will cost you more.

As an example, return flights from London to Orlando were £889 in summer 2024. A few months later in Autumn–booked further in advance and out of season–London to Orlando return flights are only £383.

3. Consider package holidays

Yes, British Airways has gotten into the package holiday game. Remember the £383 return flight to Orlando, package holidays for 7 nights started from only £575 per person. That is less than an additional £200 per person to stay in a hotel. 

Better yet, the most discounted items in British Airways sales have been package holidays recently.

Cancellation policy

Flights can be cancelled for a full refund in the first 24 hours following your booking. This protects you if you make a mistake or find another flight you prefer more. After that, you cannot get a refund on your flight aside from a claim through your travel insurance.

To make any changes to your booking, you will need to visit the Manage My Booking page. There is also a helpful calculator to estimate the fees associated with purchasing a ticket, changing your booking or cancelling your flight.

Baggage policy

All flights come with hand bags and cabin bags. Economy class does not include a checked bag and must be booked extra with a limit of one checked bag per passenger.  Premium economy and business class can have a total of two checked bags (one is included), while first class members can check 3 bags.

Hand bags

• Up to 40 x 30 x 15cm (16 x 12 x 6in)
• Up to 23kg (51lb)
• To be placed under the seat

Cabin bags

• Up to 56 x 45 x 25cm (22 x 18 x 10in) - includes wheels and handles
• Up to 23kg (51lb)
• No valuables, electronics or essential medicines

Checked bags

• Up to 90 x 75 x 43cm (35 x 30 x 17in)
• Up to 23kg (51lb) in Economy and Premium Economy
• Up to 32kg (70lb) in First and Business

Infant baggage allowance

Children under the age of two are allowed to check in two of the following items for free: 

• Collapsible pushchair
• Car seat
• Travel cot
• Baby carrier

Avios points

You should know everything you need to about earning and using Avios points in step 1 of saving at British Airways. This section is extra information you need to know, specifically claiming back missing Avios points and converting Nectar to Avios points.

Mistakes happen and it is possible your Avios or Tier Points are not added to your account after a flight. In the small chance this happens, rest assured that you can claim them back up to 6 months after your flight. Locate the claim form under the ‘Claiming missing Avios’ headline to get your points added onto your account.

Nectar now works with British Airways so you can convert those Nectar Points sitting in your account to Avios points. 400 Nectar points equals 250 Avios, which is good value.

Especially when Nectar sometimes runs promotions like 2x points on your shops at Sainsburys and other locations when you convert Nectar points to Avios.
