1. Stick to what you know

Sure, that random website offering 90% off the latest Nintendo Switch might sound like a dream come true, but if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Stick to trusted retailers like John Lewis, Amazon, Currys and other big names you know and love. When in doubt, Google the website to check for reviews on sites like Trustpilot and Feefo.

2. Don’t fall for phishy emails

Your inbox will likely be flooded with Black Friday sale alerts, but before you click on that ‘exclusive deal’ from a ‘trusted’ retailer, take a closer look. Scammers are pros at creating fake emails that look legit. Check the sender’s email address and hover over links before you click. If something smells fishy, it’s best to head to the retailer’s website directly through your browser instead.

3. Check for the padlock 

When you’re about to enter your card details, make sure you’re shopping on a secure site. Look for the little padlock icon in the address bar and make sure the URL starts with “https” – the ‘s’ stands for ‘secure’. If you don’t see it, close the tab faster than you can say ‘Cyber Monday!’.

4. Use your virtual account or credit card 

For an extra layer of security, consider using an online payment platform like PayPal or Apple Pay. These services act as a buffer between your bank account and the big, bad internet, keeping your financial details out of the wrong hands. Alternatively, opt for a credit card over a debit card – credit cards offer better fraud protection, so if something goes wrong, you’re more likely to get your money back.

6. Beware of your surfing surrounding 

It’s tempting to shop while relaxing in a cafe, but public Wi-Fi is a magnet for cybercriminals. If you’re shopping on the go, use your mobile data or a secure VPN. Otherwise, wait until you’re back in the safety of your home Wi-Fi, where you control who’s snooping.

7. Trust your gut – and your bank 

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t be afraid to walk away. And if you’re serious about security, set up alerts with your bank to notify you of any suspicious activity on your account. That way, if a scammer tries to make a move, you’ll know about it before they even finish their shopping spree.

Early November: Retailers like Amazon and AO.com kicked off their pre-Black Friday sales in the first week of November. Amazon offered early deals on tech gadgets and smart home devices with up to 50% off and AO.com discounted large appliances by as much as 30%.

20th November: Black Friday Week began with retailers like Currys, B&Q and LOOKFANTASTIC launching early access deals. Currys offered up to 40% off laptops and smart TVs, B&Q featured discounts of up to 25% on power tools and DIY essentials and LOOKFANTASTIC had designer beauty on offer for up to half-price.

24th November (Black Friday): The big day saw major deals from John Lewis, Argos and Selfridges. John Lewis had price cuts of up to 30% on premium electronics and home goods, Argos offered up to 40% off on gaming consoles and kids' toys and Selfridges showcased luxury fashion and accessories at up to 50% off.

27th November (Cyber Monday): The shopping marathon concluded with exclusive online offers from eBay, Boden and Wayfair. eBay featured flash sales with up to 60% off refurbished tech, Boden offered up to 40% off selected styles – plus an extra 20% off discount code – and Wayfair wrapped up with up to 70% off furniture and home decor.

Mid-November: Early sales were rolled out by retailers like Very and Halfords, with Debenhams offering up to 40% off on fashion, electronics and home goods, while Halfords provided discounts of up to 30% on bikes and car maintenance products.

21st November: Black Friday Week featured retailers like M&S and House of Fraser getting into the spirit. M&S dropped prices by up to 50% on clothing and food hampers and House of Fraser reduced designer fashion by up to 40%.
